Today 24 states will have their Democratic or Republican primaries. This is the day that could make or break a run at the White House. Among the candidates for the Democrats are Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. The Republican candidates are Mitt Romney, John McCain, and Mike Hucakbee. No matter which candidate we are talking about this day is of the utmost importance. (the New York Times has great primary coverage)
Some states are winner take all states and some states award delegates proportionally. In a winner take all scenario, if the candidate wins the popular vote in a state then they get ALL of the delegates for that state. In a proportional scenario candidates receive delegates based on the percentage of the popular vote they have received. In a hypothetical world let's say the state of Alderan (Star Wars planet for those of you without the knowledge) has 24 total delegates. This means that if candidate Crowell wins 60% of the vote compared with candidate Dempster's 40% then Crowell will get 14 delegates and Dempster will get 10 delegates. This is complicated I know.
The Democratic race is extremely close. So much so that every delegate counts. The battle between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton is becoming more and more intense as time goes on. Both candidates have focused heavily on California because of the 370 delegates at stake in the state. Both candidates have received endorsements from a number of people. Even if one candidate wins the majority of delegates today the Democratic nomination will still be up in the air.
The Republican race is between John McCain, Mitt Romney, and Mike Huckabee. John McCain has slowly pulled away from the other candidates. With impressive victories today McCain could make his lead large enough to where he practically locks up the nomination.
In any case, this is an exciting day for our country as many citizens exercise their rights in choosing their leaders. What are your thoughts on the day and the candidates?

I think that we should have a Super Friday (replacing SSR with a primary). The day is important for both parties. John McCain will win CA, I predict so.

Vote McCain 08
I suppose that can be discussed. Although I think that it will be easier to conduct the primary voting in social studies classes. California appears to be close, but we will not know until the morning since the polls do not close until 11:00 here. Huckabee had a night that might position him for being McCain's Vice Presidential candidate on the ticket.

I think John McCain has the best imagration and Iraq polosey. I also do not thinck forceing health care and dramaticly raiseing taxs helps anything.
I think mccain in the best because he is not goin to force health care and will not raise taxes. Thoses are 2 good things about him
I believe that Barack Obama has the best policies in the democratic side, mostly with setting a certain date for Iraqi troops to return home. The only thing i disagree with is his pro-abortion ways. I watched the results yesterday with my dad, but i do not recall any of the results.
I think John McCain should win the election. He is an attractive man and has hair as white as snow. He is a great leader. He might be old but he still uses his brain and accomplishes great things.
-You favorite student,
Micaela
I believe that John McCain would make an ah-mazing president. He has all of the right beliefs and he would run the country greatly. He could control the immigration problem and help us with the War in Iraq. If McCain gets Rudy Giuliani as his vice president then there is no way he can lose.

Being serious this time. Once again I think John McCain should win the election. He has good beliefs and is a great leader. I don't watch many thing about the election but of what I have seen he has done a great job. John McCain should be the president.
Your favorite student again,
Micaela
Barack Obama is really neat!!! =B. Oprah helped. I predict he will win. just because i say so!! -.- i think you should liven up our social studies class.
I think that Barack Obama should win because i think he would help out the society and would lower taxes. I think he is a good democratic representative and would help everyone.

I think that John McCain will win California over Hilary Cliton because many people don't like her or her ideas and with that many delegates it makes her a threat.

Obama? He wants to end the war in Iraq which will result in Iran over running Iraq and messing everything up. McCain is way better.
McCain:
1) For wining the war
2) Against abortion
3) Against gun laws
4) Hes exprienced
5) He is Republican
6) He was endorsed by the Terminater
Mr. Crowell, we MUST campaign! Mr. Crowell please bring up the primary in school meetings and in class. I will spearhead Squad McCain.
Barack Obama should win because he has opera one his side, even though there are some bad things going around , hes would still be a good president and hillay cliton would make a horrible president.\

Mr. Crowell. Are you familar with "the Kessel Run"?
Joey says Mitt Romney is the best candidate for the presdient cause he wants to lower taxes so we could have more money in our pockets and not give it all to the goverment. He aslo wants to protect the border unlike Hillary Clinton who wants everone to come over. Go Romney
Mr. Crowell, Ron Paul is still in the race give him credit.
Mitt Romney dropped and endorsed McCain.

i think barack obama is going to beat clinton in calaifornia just b/c i like him and many other people like him over clinton b/c i think she can not run our country or really any thing for that matter
Well folks, good posting - I suppose. It seems that most people have a little bit of a handle on the primary contests. If you have been paying attention over the past few days some things have happened.
1. As Evan pointed out, Romney "suspended" his campaign - in other words he dropped out.
2. Clinton and McCain won California
3. Mike Huckabee seems to be in position to become McCain's Vice Presidential candidate on the ticket.
Some things needing addressed in your posts.
1. "Oprah" is not spelled "Opera"
2. Republicans are running against Republicans and Democrats against Democrats. They will not run against one another until this summer and fall
3. Spelling in general
Last thing, I cannot believe the extreme dislike most have for Hillary. And the Millennium Falcon made the Kessel Run in under 12 parsecs.
-Mr. Crowell
WELL I WAS HOPING FOR MITT ROMNEY TO WIN BUT SADLY HE DROPED OUT!!! I LIKED ROMNEY B/C HE WAS THE ONLY TRUSTWORTHY PERSON OUT OF ALL OF THE CANDIDATES.
I DONT LIKE HILLARY B/C SHE IS A SOCAILIST. AND I TRUST WATER FROM MEXICO MORE THAN HER.
I DONT TRUST OBAMA B/C THE CHURCH HE BELONGS TO HATES WHITES. AND I DONT LIKE THAT NOT ONE BIT!!
AND MCCAIN JUST SCARES ME. THAT IS ALL I HAVE TO SAY ABOUT HIM
Mr. Crowell this is Kaitlyn and Micaela and we have a question about our project. Everytime we try to put it onto the cd it says "not accessible, incorrect function." what does this mean and how can we bring in our project if this doesn't work? Thanks.
Huckabee is doing really good in the caucuses
Hard Workers,
If you cannot access the cd, that might mean that you are trying to write on to a cd that has already been written on and is not rewritable. Look at the cd, it actually needs to say rewritable in order to add data after the first attempt to burn.
I would suggest trying to email the file to my school account. If emailing fails then I have an extra flash drive that you can get tomorrow and put your project on for Tuesday.
Hope this helped, good luck
-Mr. Crowell
The primaries have really been one sided this weekend. Obama and Huckabee continue to do well. These were states where they were predicted to do well, and they have not disappointed. While Obama is well within striking distance, it appears that Huckabee has a long road ahead of him to truly be competitive.
In response to some of the comments. I am not sure how an elderly Senator (McCain) scares people with Republican leanings. I suppose it is because he is a centrist Republican rather than a conservative Republican. One thing is for certain though, at this point in time a centrist Republican seems to be in much better position to defeat the Democratic candidates than a conservative Republican.
Romney certainly seemed to best embrace Conservative values, and now that he is out I think that we will not see McCain focus as closely on convincing people that he is Conservative enough. Rather he will court voters in the center with talk of health care reform, immigration, and the war.
As far as Hillary is concerned, she certainly would expand certain federal programs, but it can be argued that her husband was more of a Republican than Richard Nixon or Dwight Eisenhower (both Republican presidents). He supported free trade, balanced budgets, and reformed welfare programs which all speak to Conservative values. So "socialist" may be a bit strong in describing her, but it is true that she would probably expand government programs while raising taxes.
I have heard that Obama attends a church that has used some racial rhetoric over the years, however I have not heard him directly support these views or make similar comments himself. Some people believe that just belonging to that church is a quiet endorsement of those same beliefs. I think in a general election this will be talked about more by the media.
These are good discussions taking place.
